Falcons are recycling
Aurielle Jones, a senior majoring in biology from Alexandria, Va., is the Toyota Green Initiative Ambassador for Saint Augustine’s University. The Toyota Green Initiative is a movement to help individuals find smart, simple ideas that can make an environmental impact in the community and their lives. As an ambassador, Jones is leading a campaign to get the university to go “green” and recycle. Recently, Jones was a semifinalist winner and received $500 to implement her idea of starting a recycling program on campus. To kick start her mission, Jones has placed recycling bins in each building.
“We have to plan for now and for the future,” Jones said. “Recycling is important because it redefines a healthier future for generations to come.”
Currently, Jones is competing to be finalist. If she is selected, she will receive a $2,500 scholarship, $500 in cash and received a leased Toyota Prius for one year. Aurielle also has helped Saint Augustine’s University lead as the #1 institution in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in the Toyota Green Initiative Pledge Contest. Saint Augustine’s University is also the #3 overall in the CIAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference category. The school with the most pledges will receive a $10,000 UNCF scholarship and an individual, who takes the pledge from the winning institution, will receive an iPad or tablet valued at $750.
